Whistle and a Prayer

Today we have a spacey, atmospheric track from the United Kingdom’s infamous Coldcut.  The two members of Coldcut are producers, Djs, artists, activists, founders and hosts of the infamous Solid Steel Radio Show, film makers, software designers… Coldcut has spent the last 20 years on the cutting edge of modern electronic music and technology.

“As befits a pair of DJs who seem to believe that the whole world is there to be cut and pasted, “we mix things, over as broad a spectrum of activities as possible.”

Everything that Happens

Looks like we are finally getting some new material from David Byrne- he announced yesterday that his new album with Brian Eno is finished, with the first song available for free download in one week.

Also on the horizon in August is his album Hymnal, a new album of material mostly culled from his work on the music for the HBO series Big Love.

In anticipation, here is a favorite track of mine, the epic, Latin flavored Miss America.

Thursday Shuffle

Today’s pick is a cover of the Dylan rarity “Moonshiner.” This was recorded by Bob Forrest for the “I’m Not There” soundtrack. Also, as a bonus, here is a cover of “Dark Eyes” by Calexico and Iron and Wine.

Insight

Interesting quote from Dangermouse in the recent issue of Interview:

Soderbrg: I’ve heard you don’t necessarily believe in talent.

Dangermouse: I guess I just look at talent as a very subjective thing. I mean, if you never tried playing an oboe, how do you know you’re not the most talented oboe player ever? The point is that if you don’t love it, it doesn’t matter. No matter how naturally gifted you are, it’s your passion that’s going to make you better and maybe touch some people. There is no genius- there is only love.

Thursday Shuffle

A new feature designed to increase the variety of music being posted.

Thursday Shuffles’ First Pick is…..

Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins- Limbo Jazz

Interesting pull as I’ve been spending the last few weeks studying up on my latin jazz in anticipation of a possible new residency I’ll be starting in the fall.

Green is the new Black.

Tech Digest reports this week:

“The first eco-nightclub has opened here in the UK in the distinguished and yet decidedly unsavory part of town that is Kings Cross. Club Surya is made of all manner of reclaimed bottles, timber and budgerigars but it’s the dancefloor that really adds the interest as far as I’m concerned.”

“Using the ever-popular piezoelectricity - essentially a way of changing kinetic energy into electrical – every badly jigged step on the boards is harnessed in tiny underfloor crystals and used to power all the needs of the club itself from lighting to sound.”

No word on what kind of music will be played at the club to maximize energy production.

Wax on and on and on….

From Nightmares On Wax Founder Dj Ease, comes a whole new roster of artists that are pushing his blend of hip hop, dub, soul, and downtempo forward into the future. Check out the standout track from Guts, and the whole roster here.

Guts- Take A Look Around

“This is only the first wave for WAXON, we have a lot of plans and way more great sounds in the pipeline” George says and smiles. “Yet this first wave already holds quite a few surprises and amazing creative work, perfectly mirroring my musical attitude and taste. I am happy and thrilled to be able to present WAXON as a healthy, open minded and vibrant playground for the inner musical child of likeminded souls who share my vision – and I sure share theirs.”- George Evelyn

Dj Mix Friday- Chicken George

Chicken George, the hero to my heroes the Illvibe Collective, just released a new mix for Blentwell, an enticing mix of hip hop, nu soul and future jazz.

Blentcast 10- Chicken George
“This episode is brought to us from three time Blentcaster Chicken George. The soulful beat merchant comes at us from a live recording made recently at the Darkroom in Chicago. Get ready for some seriously smoothed out beat and rhythms paired with some outstanding neo-soul refixes and white labels.”
