Clip of Exclusive Burial Remix

After spending all summer on the edge of my seat, waiting for Burial’s Dj Kicks, we get a listen into his current sound: A remix of drum and bass artist Commix. How does it sound? Ambient, drowned in reverb, glowing… more or less exactly like what we’ve come to expect.  Thank heaven.

Wax Poetics Volume Two Available

One of our favorite magazines ever drops its latest book, The Anthology Volume. 2.

“Eight years deep in the game and WaxPoetics has become one of the most respected music rags in the world with its distinct mixture of vinyl archaeology and behind-the-scenes stories of artists both obscure and well-known. Anthology, Vol.1 focused on the first five issues, so it stands to reason that this new hardcover collection should bring us creme de la creme of Issues #6-10 (Fall 2003 – Fall 2004) in blown-up 8.5″ x 11″ format. Includes pieces on Sun Ra, 45 King, Incredible Bongo Band, Rev. Eugene McDaniels, Willie Mitchell, Scientist, Les McCann, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Roy Ayers, Eddie Bo (and so, so many more) along with a slew of rare full-color pictures and label scans.”

Twilight Notes in the Sun Sentinel

Special Thanks to Ben Crandall, who wrote a great piece about the opening of the new YOLO Lounge in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. I really couldn’t be more excited about being a part of this new concept. Read the whole thing here.

We’re blessed with free will, so we choose to be ill.”
— Talib Kweli

“I stumbled across these words while researching the South Florida soundscaper Adam Foster, who presents them as a personal, musical code on his Web site. But could there be a more delicious interpretation for what bedevils all of us these days? And how are we to read it, as a gloomy indictment of our laissez-faire laziness or a subversive cri de coeur for a generation of laid-back lounge-istes?

I’m going with the latter, and its cockeyed optimism. Lots to look forward to, after all …

The much-anticipated downtown Fort Lauderdale restaurant Yolo is set to open Sept. 30, bringing the acclaimed work of restaurateur duo Tim Petrillo and Peter Boulukos to lower Las Olas Boulevard. As newsworthy as this is for those seeking a consistently high-quality meal at a reasonable price (Petrillo and Boulukos are the guys responsible for Himmarshee Bar & Grill, River House and Tarpon Bend), a lot of my excitement stems from the adjoining O Lounge, an urbane study in brick and candlelight.

That’s where you’ll find Foster, one of a trio of vibe managers sculpting a low-lounge sound via turntable and laptop. What to expect from the vinyl-obsessed Illadelphia native?

“I’m still not really sure,” says Foster, a faithful adherent of the Philly Soul aesthetic. “It’ll be lounge-y and jazzy. I’ve spent all summer researching ’60s Latin jazz: Cal Tjader, Stan Getz. And my dad’s vinyl … guys like Miles Davis and Coltrane. And Thievery Corporation is a big influence…”

OK, my head is spinning. In a good way.

Yolo, its dazzling palm-shrouded patio and, especially, the creative serendipity promised by O Lounge, will make 333 E. Las Olas a new “it” spot in SoFLa. Consider this your license to ill.”

Amazon Stocks over 250,000 Vinyl Records

“Amazon recently launched a vinyl section with more than 250,000 titles, and bricks-and-mortar retailers like Best Buy and HMV are stocking more LPs. Indie record shops such as Other Music in New York and Amoeba Music in Berkeley, Calif., never stopped selling records.”

“Turntable sales in the U.S. increased more than 80% from 2006 to 2007 and continue to rise this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. “Last year and this year have been our busiest ever,” says Kris Jones of London’s Sounds of the Universe record shop, which sells more music on vinyl than on CD.
