The Jazz Influence

Check out this release from one of the original deep house producers: Kevin Yost. Instead of his usual deep, sensual, beat-driven house productions, for this series Yost enlisted the help of artists from I! Records to create a new concept- a selection of downtempo tracks that highlight the real jazz influence on electronic music. This release is authentic jazz, something that could only come from a producer like Yost, who spent years studying Jazz keyboard as a child.   Kevin Yost- Bring It

Sounds Like Love

How do we make it in America?  We don’t do it alone.

Check this song from Illa J (Production by that late J. Dilla) featuring the angelic Debi Nova on vocals, about the joys of being together and creating music.  This track transports, capturing that perfect moment between you and yours.  Here’s to hoping you’ve found that one, the one who makes you want to work, who makes you want to share your gift with the world, the one who inspires you.  Happy valentines day to all of you. Make everyday love.

Roll With Us…

What do you love about Hip hop?

To us, it is not just about the sound.  We love the flow.  We feel the beats, the bass lines, the lyrics, the production.  The bounce.  For us though, it is more than that- it is an underlying attitude, the message, that really gets us.  Sure, hip hop can be materialistic, egotistical, and misogynist. At it’s roots though, it is about something else: something purely American.  At its root, hip hop is about creating success and prosperity through nothing but your hard work, raw talent, and creativity.  About building something from nothing.  An idea that we can all get behind- that we are all working towards.

This is how WE make it in America.

This week we are counting down to the premiere of HBO’s new show “How to make it in America.”  This is a show from the creators of entourage- it features the story of two enterprising designers trying to make it big in the the fashion world.  The show takes place in NYC, and managers to capture the music, nightlife, style, inspiration, and entrepreneurial spirit of our greatest city.  Follow me to catch a sneak peak.

So this week- it is all about you.  This week is our tribute to all of you, the producers, painters, singers, photographers, DJ’s, players, lovers, actors, photographers… everyone out there struggling, working to make a dollar and make their mark in this world.

This week we will be sharing our favorite NYC hip hop tracks- the tracks that get us hype, that make us sing along, make us get to work, make us dream big.  Nobody does it better than New York.  To start us off we have Cam’ron, which is featured in the epic first episode of the new series.

This week, it is all about you.  Game on.   Cam’ron- Oh Boy

Preview: King Britt New Track

It’s monday again and I’d like to personally wish you a great start to the new week… In that spirit, I wanted to link you all up with King Britt, who is giving away the first track from his new album, “The Intricate Beauty.”  The more I listen to this track, the more I love it.  It features singer Astrid Suryanto, with a distinct sultry NYC house vibe, but it opens up into a huge, emotional release as beautiful vocals and lyrics build together into a crescendo.  Intricate beauty, indeed.
