URB King Britt Seductive Mix

Just wanted to share this with you guys- a brand new deep, seductive dj mix from Philly legend King Britt, who I had the pleasure of meeting this weekend during WMC, and I was lucky enough to see him Dj twice, once for his cd release party, and an early deep house set at the AM only showcase.  He was extremely genuine, humble, and just cool.  Miles Davis may have been the birth of cool, but King Britt is keeping that legacy alive.

“This weeks top shelf DJ mix comes from Philly house legend King Britt in celebration of his upcoming album, Intricate Beauty, due out in April on Nervous Records. Britt mixes a sensual set of his own new tunes, plus tracks from Fuckpony, Vikter Duplaix, Lykki Li and more.”

New Bonobo Record Release- “Black Sands”

Bonobo is releasing his fourth full-length record at the end of this month.  Bonobo has truly grown and matured as an artist, from his first singles for ninja tune when he was still creating simple, sample driven downtempo tracks, to now recording and performing with a full band, composing intricate songs with full orchestration and vocals.  This record features three tracks with vocals from Andreya Triana, one of my favorite voices in electronic music, who has worked with artists like Flying Lotus, Mr. Scruff, Natural Self, Jazz Sensation, and Aaron Jerome.

Check this track, a beautiful ode to self development and spirituality, guitars, saxes, and keys create a deep, melancholy atmosphere, with a distinct eastern feel.  Bonobo feat. Andreya Triana- Stay The Same

Beautiful/Sad Mixtape Release

This mixtape has been a long time in the making- it is not a dj mix, just a collection of songs. It is not about genre or style, it is about the power of music to communicate a very specific, very human experience.

It is about the feeling that life is sadness, joyful, serene, choatic; that life is suffering, but that in that experience there is an intense beauty, and we feel it in the pulse of life as it passes by us.  It is melancholy, it is peaceful, wistful, reflective, it is the remembrance of the past, of those no longer in our lives.  It’s like the reflection of lights on the water, it’s a long drive home late at night, it’s beautiful, and it’s sad.

It’s like my best friend passed away, and while it kills me that he is gone, I know he lived a full, good life, and the lessons and memories he gave me will last forever.

The artists who wrote these songs have tapped into something primal in the human experience, and it was my pleasure putting this compilation together for you.  Dedicated in loving memory..

Stuck On Repeat: Broken Bells

Dangermouse and James Mercer are “Broken Bells,” and they released their first album on tuesday.  Check the story here from NPR, (where you can stream the whole album) and enjoy the track “October,” which has been stuck on repeat on my ipod literally all day long for the last two days, and bringing some much needed drama and destiny into my day to day routine.

“Mercer and Burton met six years ago at a music festival, and each was a fan of the other’s music. They kept in touch, but the timing wasn’t right until last year. The Shins’ latest record was long done and so were the tours, and for Danger Mouse, his band Gnarls Barkley was between records, as well. But this wasn’t going to be just another production job for Danger Mouse, and for Mercer, this was to be more than a mere solo project. They both wanted a collaboration, they both enjoyed each other’s ideas.  This is a smart pop record full of melody and invention. It’s pretty and at times unorthodox, and it finds both Burton and Mercer drawing on each other’s talents to make a record unique to each of them.”  Broken Bells- October

Pantha Du Prince + Panda Bear

Seeing these two names together was enough to get my exciting before even hearing a note.  Two of the most cutting edge ambient/electronic artists making music today, getting together to collaborate on a track is big news, no matter what the result.  The result is a wonderful journey of tech house and ambience, with layers upon layers of vocal melodies from Panda Bear- all building to an emotional, pulsing crescendo.  I’m going to give you the original to stream or download, but be sure to check the full EP with remixes from Four Tet, Lawrence, and Efdemin.

Ubiquity: 20 Years Of West Coast Cool

Wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate Ubiquity Records on 20 years of music, style, and success.  Ubiquity helped to develop, along with Om, a cool, breezy style of jazzy hip hop, downtempo, brazilian, soul, and dance music.  They brought us artists like Greyboy, SA-RA creative partners, Thievery Corp, As One, Owusu and Hannibal, Quantic, Platinum Pied Pipers, Roy Davis Jr, Shawn Lee, Blank Blue, and Breakestra.  It is very special to find a label that can release so much variety and different styles, while keeping such a high level of quality, and staying true to their vision of “West Coast Cool.”

In addition to the label, they have developed a full apparel line, a series of legendary weekly parties, as well as a sound library that has been extensively utilized by Hollywood and Madison Avenue.  Read the whole story here, about the little San Fran label that could, and did.

Check this classic track from my favorite Ubiquity Artist.  Greyboy- See My Eyes
