A-Trak, the Dj/Producer/Label/Boutique Owner/Writer/Robot writes another insightful column, this time for Huffington Post.  In it, he reflects on his childhood hero Adam Yauch, who sadly passed away last week.  Follow the link below to read the whole article and take a listen to one of our old favorites. 

“As music fans, we may have many favorite bands during a lifetime. Many posters on our bedroom walls, many memorized verses. But when the smoke clears, there’s usually one band you can look back on and think “these guys raised me, they remained the definition of cool throughout the years, I wanted to be like them and studied everything they did.” For me, and for many others across generations, that was the Beastie Boys. With the heartbreaking passing of Adam Yauch, I can’t help but reflect on the influence they had on me.”

Very excited to share this new song from Yeasayer, called Henrietta.  A cd (cd??) of this song was sent out to fans on the bands mailing list with no information attached- no news of a new album on the way, but the band does start their first tour since 2010 next month.

Henrietta is a beautiful, strange, sprawling track awash in lush synths and effects, the vocals and bassline plodding along then opening up into a spacey, epic crescendo.  Hopefully this is just the first single of a new album of material, and it all sounds like this.  Yeasayer continues to mature and impress with each release.  Listen and download below.

Morgan Page, currently touring the world in support of his smash “In The Air” album gives a shiny, progressive/electro-house remix to this indie-pop track from Meiko. The remix was released to coincide with the release of Meiko’s new record. Hopefully more dance artists will continue cross breeding with indie artists, similar to the way Tiesto and Morgan both have collaborated with Tegan and Sara.

I have spent the entire day listening back to Voorn’s catalog of releases and remixes- he has released a remarkable number of tracks over the years.  As a working Dj I am constantly being pulled between deeper/soulful and bigger/harder sounds. Voorn’s productions feel like the perfect space in between.  All at once they are danceable, thoughtful, upbeat, delicate, soulful, and lush.

Finally, some new material from Passion Pit- check this new single from their forthcoming album, Gossamer.  “Take a Walk” is a return to their trademark synthy electro-pop for Passion Pit, even though it is a little darker and more somber than songs like Sleepyhead and Little Secrets.  Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Check out our review the Weeknd show at Revolution in Fort Lauderdale last night.

It has been a long time since I have been at a concert with such ravenous fans- the show itself sold out in 5 hours and with doors opening at 7pm there were people lined up to get in starting at 12pm.  Almost every single person in the crowd was jumping, making out, and singing along to every word- for the first few songs you could barely hear the music above the screaming.

This concert, and indeed the Weeknd’s entire career is truly a phenomenon of the internet age.  The weekend has never put out any official releases, only youtube videos, three mixtapes, and a couple guest spots on Drake’s latest album.  At this time last year, the first mixtape had just been released and very few people knew who the Weeknd was.  To rise that quickly in just a year speaks to the quality and uniqueness of the music, but also to the lightning fast, always connected world we now live in.

As for the concert, The Weeknd put together a full band with him, who did a great job re-creating his tracks.  The show was quick, exactly an hour with encore included.  Still, he managed to fit most of the highlights from his three mixtapes into his short set, running quickly through his biggest “hits” as well as his collaborations with Drake. (without Drake’s parts)  Highlights for me included High for this to open  The Morning, Trust Issues, Dirty Diana, and Outside.

If you didn’t make it out last night, check this video from his Coachella set which was more or less his set last night, give or take a couple of songs.

Instagram, the photo-sharing social media app that has taken the world by storm, has started to  take over the art world as well.  Instagram is one of my current addictions and it has very useful applications for storytelling, sharing, and networking.  It changes the way you view the world in a subtle way that photographers understand- you are constantly looking to capture something beautiful.

Two events have caught my eye recently, one here in Lauderdale and one in New York.  C&I studios are printing and showcasing work from locals here according to a set of subjects dictated for each day of the month.  The show takes place during Art Walk on Saturday April 28th.  Find out more here. 

Our friend Mick Boogie is performing at another Instagram gallery opening in New York at the W Hotel on May 1st.  Check the write-up from the New York Times.

“Dozens of hotels have notable art collections, but a few are focusing specifically on photography, with shows that wouldn’t be out of place at a gallery. W Hotels, for example, will introduce its first Instagram photo exhibition on May 1 at the Living Room in its Times Square property. The hotel is in partnership with the photo-sharing company to curate a display of pictures from New York-based Instagrammers who capture architecture, design and street art in the city. The exhibition will be on display through June.”

The past and the present really came together for me on this one- take a look at this video of a recent performance from Bob Weir along with members of The National.  The Grateful Dead were my favorite band growing up and The National are my current favorite.  They are working together to raise money for Headcount, a voter registration charity.

The band takes us through classics from the Dead’s back catalog, a couple of originals from The National, and a few covers.  Though the two groups may seem worlds apart, a closer listen reveals alot of similarities in their music.  The National will also be recording a Dead cover album with proceeds going to charity.

Today we are featuring Miike Snow’s new album “Happy to You” for our weekly new release tuesday.  Snow’s first album has become a recent classic, with anticipation running very high for this release. We have spent the afternoon dancing around the fake offices enjoying this recent live set from Fred Everything.  Our followers know that Fred is one of our favorite producers- his tracks are all over our mixes and live sets- but listening to this mix we are reminded of what a great dj he is as well.  This mix was recorded last month in Vancouver at Fortune Sound’s “Experience Saturday” party and is a perfect dancefloor ready deep house mix, with just the right touch of funk, soul, and disco thrown in.

While we are a little underwhelmed by the new track from the Gorillaz featuring James Murphy and Andre 3000, you cannot deny this video.  Great to see the characters back in action, this time with Pixar style animation.
